History of the Triumph Herald 13/60 (1968)

The Triumph Herald 13/60 was introduced in late 1967 as the final and most refined version of the Herald range. Styled by the legendary Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, the 13/60 carried forward the Herald’s sharp lines and excellent visibility, but added a cleaner Vitesse‑inspired front end, improved interior trim, and a stronger, smoother 1296cc engine.

This updated motor delivered 61 bhp, giving the 13/60 noticeably better performance than earlier Heralds. Combined with Triumph’s famously light rack‑and‑pinion steering, front disc brakes, and simple, reliable mechanical layout, the 13/60 quickly earned a reputation as the best-driving Herald ever built.

Production ran from 1967 to 1971, with the 13/60 marking the end of the Herald story before Triumph moved on to the Toledo and later Dolomite. Today, the 13/60 is appreciated for its charm, simplicity, and classic British styling — and NZ‑new examples are increasingly hard to find, making this one a standout for collectors or anyone wanting an easy, enjoyable classic.
